Thirteen Years of Failure

Thirteen Years of Failure is a series of photographs in response to my experience growing up in Barnsley as a young person, first-hand experiencing the effects of a town left in continuous disarray by the British Government.

As a post-industrial northern town struggling economically, these images are my personal documentation of Barnsley as a space characterised by financial hardship and a lack of opportunities. This project negotiates a sense of home with Barnsley as a place that, throughout my teenage years, I felt had failed me. Now, as an adult, I understand and accept that in a sense it was the government’s lack of investment in my hometown which limited my opportunities as a young person.
